Questions and Answers

Will this be Duncan’s last season in the league?
A: As everyone knows, Duncan has been the center piece for the San Antonio Spurs since his arrival in 1997.  He has won four championships, two NBA Finals MVPs, two NBA MVPs and numerous other awards throughout his career, but don’t expect him to retire after this season unless he wins another championship in June.
How will the team adjust to the lockout-shortened season?
A: Whatever the circumstances, Coach Popovich will have his players prepared for the season.  With a healthy Big Three and shortened season, the squad should be in position to put up another successful season as a top-5 NBA squad.
How will the draft day moves improve the team?
A: The Spurs’ draft day moves solidified the Spurs’ point guard situation with Cory Joseph, and helped the aging Duncan down low with the acquisition for Kawhi Leonard.  It’s tough to lose a player like George Hill, but the team will be in good standing for opening night after their offseason acquisitions.
Is the window still open for another championship run?
A: The window is certainly open and there’s no question about it.  The team is still led by the Big Three and acquired some young talent in the draft (Cory Joseph and Kawhi Leonard). The shortened 66 game season (similar to 1999) certainly helps the aging team, who held the league’s second best regular season record last season.  Expect the team to once again be a true contender for the NBA Championship, even with their window closing.  Both the Lakers and Mavericks lost key pieces from their championship teams, so the Western Conference is expected to be weaker this season.  The Spurs, on the other hand, return many of their key pieces from last season, and have remained a consistent contender over the past decade.  Sidekicks Matt Bonner, Gary Neal, and Richard Jefferson will be pivotal pieces for the Spurs if they remain focused on a 5th Championship in the Tim Duncan-Gregg Popovich era.

Horned Frogs Win 8th Straight W/4th Qtr Comeback

Tonight was a tough night for the Horned Frogs of TCU, but the game easily could have gone the other way.  Louisiana Tech, from the get-go, carried the game's momentum and easily could have won by numerous touchdowns.  After the teams traded 3-and-outs to begin the game, the Bulldogs found a hole to take the first score of the game, a Matt Nelson 23 yard field goal.  Louisiana Tech's defense was dominating and TCU looked lost after their numerous dropped passes.  The Frogs finally received a break, as Bulldog rushing back Hunter Lee fumbled the ball to give TCU both momentum and the ball.  TCU used 8 plays and 57 yards to tie up the game, but Louisiana Tech responded with a 7 play, 59 yard drive to expand their lead to seven.  The Bulldog defense had refueled and was back in control.  Their defense allowed only 24 yards in TCU's next two possessions and caused a fumble.  The Horned Frogs were in trouble and not playing like the #18 team in the country, but their time would come.  After a missed field goal attempt by the Bulldogs and an overthrown pass from Louisiana Tech quarterback Colby Cameron that resulted in an interception, TCU was reenergized and focused to take advantage.  After five plays, the Horned Frogs tied the game at 10 with seconds remaining in the first half, and were back in control of the game.  Their confidence had soared and were ready to carry their late luck over to the second half.

The second half would indeed begin in TCU's favor, and the Horned Frogs used their then-longest drive of the game with 11 plays and 55 yards to take their first lead of the game.  Louisiana Tech caught a break minutes later, as TCU's second turnover set up the tying touchdown for Louisiana Tech.  After Louisiana Tech scored their second consecutive touchdown with 2:27 left in the 3rd, the TCU offense finally took control of the game.  Sophomore quarterback Casey Pachall used an incredible 9 minute, 18 play, 72 yard drive to wear down the tiresome Bulldog defense and hang on for the team's eighth consecutive victory heading into the Big 12 next season.  TCU's 31-24 victory tonight also marks the sixth consecutive victory at the Poinsettia Bowl for a Mountain West Conference team.

Cowboys Back in the Saddle After Saturday's Win; NFC East Up For Grabs

It's amazing how in a matter of days the fate of a team can turn a complete 180 degrees.  A week ago, the Dallas Cowboys were in shambles after blowing another 4th quarter lead and losing their second consecutive game.  The feeling around the league was the Cowboys were dead and the Giants were set to take the division.  This week though, the feeling around DFW is that the Cowboys are once again in control of their destiny and in the driver's seat for the NFC East division crown, after a dominating 31-15 victory in Tampa Bay on Saturday.  The Cowboys' dominant run game, led by Felix Jones' 108 yards rushing, set up another dominating performance by Tony Romo.  Romo, who continues what could be his greatest season as a Cowboy, threw three TD passes and rushed for another before halftime, and finished the game 23/30 for 249 yards.  The skeptical defense also played well, allowing only 190 yards in the game and one touchdown. As dominant as the team played, they almost gave away the game late.  An early sack on Romo in the second half led to the first Tampa Bay score of the game and the tide would turn.  The Cowboys looked deflated and outplayed for most of the second half, but held on for the victory.

As Sunday began, the Cowboys held a half game lead in the division after their victory on Saturday.  An unexpected Washington victory over the G-Men extended Dallas' lead to one with two games to play.  The "Dream Team" Eagles are also back in the hunt, after their second consecutive victory Sunday.  The Cowboys certainly control their own destiny, but match-ups against two division foes to end the season will make their run to the playoffs a tough one.
